Cristiano Ronaldo’s Diet in 2026

How does the world’s first billionaire baller stay at the top after 40?

Diet and training have been at the heart of Ronaldo’s success for more than two decades. He follows his strict diet with relentless discipline – but still allows himself some surprising cheat meals.

Breakfast 1

06:00

He wakes up at 6am every day. Followed by light stretching and rehydration. And then, here’s how the Cristiano Ronaldo diet begins: a simple glass of water.

Here’s why drinking water first thing is important:

A bottle of water and a full cup of water
  • It helps replenish fluids lost overnight
  • Boosts energy
  • Improves concentration
  • Kickstarts your metabolism
  • And revitalizes your body

Next, it’s Ronaldo’s signature shake to power him through his first workout. It’s a Protein shake, and Cristiano’s recipe gives you 22.9g to help build muscle. The key ingredient is Herbalife Formula 1 Sport, and he mixes this recipe in a blender every morning:

A container of Herbalife Formula 1 Sport
  • 2 scoops of Herbalife24 Formula 1 Sport
  • 320ml fat-free skim milk
  • 1 banana
  • ½ cup of strawberries
  • 3-5 ice cubes
  • Blend until combined

Takeaway

Getting up early increases your output. Making it a habit makes it happen every day. Imagine what you could do with an extra 7-14 hours a week.

After stamina training and a 90-minute nap, it’s time for breakfast! Breakfast is a selection of these foods – different each day, to combat the repetition of foods.

Takeaway

All of Ronaldo’s meals are balanced – even breakfast. He has a high protein diet, but he doesn’t load up on protein one meal and then veggies the next. He eats every 3-4 hours, which seems like a lot, but none of his meals are heavy (like avocado toast), which means they’re digested quickly. He does that by minimizing complex carbs and sugary foods. Obviously, burning a lot of calories helps!

But it’s repetitive, so Ronaldo finds variety by eating different kinds of vegetables and fish each day – sea bream, sea bass, swordfish, tuna, and cod are his favorites.

Takeaway

Eating at least 2-3 hours before bedtime, as Ronaldo does, is very important. It’s the key to a good night’s kip. During sleep, the body focuses on repair, rest, and rejuvenation. Eating too soon before bed diverts energy to digestion, raising your heart rate and disrupting that process. You’re more likely to have a restless night.

Cheat Meals

The good news is that, despite his incredible self-discipline, Cristiano’s only human! There has to be some pleasure, right?

Ronaldo also has children, so who says no to some Birthday cake? Though this isn’t an everyday treat, having something like a slice of pizza with the family on movie night is a semi-regular cheat meal.

Food

Surprising Benefits

Sourdough Bread

A loaf of sliced sourdough bread on a plate
  • Improved digestion and enhanced nutrient absorption due to its slow fermentation process
  • Contains antioxidants, also from the fermentation process
  • Contains beneficial bacteria and is a source of prebiotics, which feed good gut bacteria and support a healthy microbiome

Pizza

A thin crust pizza with peppers and pepperoni
  • Sure, there’s bad in pizza, but there’s plenty of good, too. Like fiber and protein
  • Lots of vitamins and minerals if you load up on vegetable toppings
  • You can get antioxidants from the tomato sauce – and cooked tomatoes even have higher lycopene levels than raw ones
  • You can also choose a healthier option, like thin crust or wholegrain base

Chocolate

A partially unwrapped dark chocolate bar in pink packaging
  • For sure, this is a trade off. Lots of sugar – but there is genuinely good stuff, too:
  • Antioxidants, minerals, fiber, and flavanols for a start
  • These can benefit heart and brain health, improve blood flow, fight inflammation, and lower blood pressure
  • Naturally, it can also improve your mood. The key is moderation and choosing cocoa content of 70% or more

Cake

A slice of delicious chocolate cake with pink frosting and a cherry on top
  • So, how can cake possibly be good for you? The high sugar content means it’s not. But, what if I said dark chocolate, fruits, or nuts? Not quite so bad now!
  • Eating cake can trigger the release of dopamine, a chemical that creates feelings of pleasure, which can improve your mood
  • Ok, that really is it. Barrel scraped!

Takeaway

Even the world’s greatest athletes are human. And life is for living, after all! Human psychology also shows us that if we don’t treat ourselves occasionally, it’s bad for mental health and we can fall off the wagon – which can be a lot messier than a small slice of cake!

Cristiano Ronaldo’s Supplement List in 2026

Herbalife Formula 1 Sport

He starts the day with his Cristiano Ronaldo Signature Shake (click here for the recipe). It contains two scoops of Formula 1 Sport.

What is it?

  • It’s a meal replacement shake specifically designed for athletes

Benefits

  • It contains 18g of protein, which supports the growth of lean muscle mass and recovery
  • Contains both Casein and Whey protein – both high quality proteins
  • Only 219 Kcal per serving
  • Includes essential vitamins and minerals, including selenium, and vitamins C and E

Dose

  • Two scoops with 2% semi-skimmed milk (Ronaldo prefers fat-free skim milk)

When?

  • Pre-breakfast or with breakfast to fuel his morning workout

Multivitamin

Every morning with breakfast, Cristiano takes a multivitamin. Even with his incredibly focused diet, he acknowledges that there could be gaps. And as we get older, particularly after 40, our bodies become less able to absorb these nutrients.

What is it?

  • A dietary supplement that combines a range of vitamins and minerals essential for the body’s normal metabolism and function

Benefits

  • Fill nutritional gaps, acting as a safety net for when your diet is lacking
  • Boosts immune function (vitamins C and D, along with zinc)
  • Promotes healthy skin and vision (vitamins A, C and E)
  • Contributes to bone health (calcium and vitamin D)
  • Supports brain function, concentration, and memory (B vitamins)

Dose

  • One per day (try combining with the same meal each day to make it a habit)

When?

  • It should be taken with water and ideally with a meal to help with the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins. Drinking water ensures proper absorption and helps prevent potential stomach irritation.

Omega-3 Fish Oil

Ronaldo’s diet is already high in fish protein. However, he still takes a daily supplement. And studies indicate that we’re less able to absorb omega-3 as our bodies age.

What is it?

  • A family of essential fats that the body cannot produce on its own. The three main types are ALA (found in seeds and nuts) and EPA and DHA (found in oily fish like salmon and mackerel).

Benefits

  • They are crucial for cell membranes, brain and eye health, heart function, and hormone production
  • Boost bone and joint health (crucial if you are very active)
  • Lowers blood pressure and triglycerides (though essential, high levels can lead to heart disease)
  • Help reduce inflammation and support immune function
  • Improve learning, memory, and cognitive function
  • May improve sleep quality and quantity

Dose

  • The recommended daily dose is 1600mg a day for men and 1100mg for women. Ronaldo takes 1000mg per day, perhaps because he already eats a lot of fish every week

TIP

The parts of fish oil that give you the benefits you’re after are EPA & DHA. When buying omega-3, these are the values that you should be looking at. The target dose you want should be the addition of these two numbers (e.g. 1000mg of omega-3 might be 400mg of EPA + 600mg of DHA).

When?

  • It should be taken with a meal that contains fat, to maximize absorption. The specific time of day is less important than consistency and avoiding an empty stomach. To minimize side effects, like acid reflux, split your dose into smaller amounts to take at different times of the day.

FAQs

Cristiano Ronaldo’s favorite food is Bacalhau à Brás, a traditional Portuguese dish made with salted cod (bacalhau – a staple in Portugal), onions, thinly sliced potatoes, and scrambled eggs.

On the surface, Ronaldo’s diet is not that different from other professional footballers: training combined with a good diet. It’s very high in lean protein, fruits, and vegetables, and very low in carbs, fat, and sugar. But there are two key differences: his diet is very specific to him and he is unusually focused on it. By using blood tests to identify and monitor key markers, he has created a food and nutrient menu perfectly balanced for his unique body. And he rigidly sticks to it. Some of his former Manchester United and Real Madrid teammates have said that when they all went out to dinner to celebrate winning a trophy, they always enjoyed a rare dessert to treat themselves… except Ronaldo.

Ronaldo aims for around 17,000 steps a day, every day, which includes playing with his kids. He trains for 3-4 hours each day, 5 days a week – including running, high-intensity sprints, and other cardio.

The key here is consistent energy levels. Despite having already hit 40, his metabolism is still very high and he burns through a lot of energy in the gym and on the pitch each day. Bringing the energy is crucial for maintaining strength and optimal performance. A steady flow of protein also helps repair muscle post-workout, prevent energy lows, and control hunger. (We all know how we’re less likely to open the cookie jar if we feel full and satisfied.)

Apart from rare treats, Ronaldo avoids processed or high-sugar foods. That means, almost no chocolate, cakes, cookies, fried foods, or junk food. He also mostly avoids carbohydrates. That means almost no fries, bread, pancakes, etc. The exception is potatoes. While he keeps these to a minimum, they have nutritional value as part of a balanced diet. His meals are low on high-fat food. Here, we’re talking saturated fats that you find in pastries or burgers. Unsaturated fats, like avocados and fatty fish, are good for you and high on Ronaldo’s menu.

Creatine is a regular on high-performance athletes’ supplement lists. However, we simply don’t know if it’s on Ronaldo’s list. While he has never mentioned taking creatine in any interview, some people maintain they’ve seen interviews with known associates, who maintain that he does take creatine supplements. However, I cannot find any record of these interviews. It is possible that these remarks actually referred to another famous Brazilian footballer, Ronaldo Luís Nazário de Lima, who was known as just ‘Ronaldo’ – or another famous Brazilian midfielder, nicknamed Ronaldinho, whose real name is also Ronaldo.

Cristiano Ronaldo is 40. He was born on February 5th 1985.
